FAQS
1. Who is this school for?
NZPAA has been designed for students (Y11 – Y13) who are passionate about both academic achievement and athletic development. Our programme suits motivated learners who value structure, challenge, and the opportunity to grow academically, physically, and emotionally in a dynamic and student-focused setting.
As a state school, entry is open to anyone who wishes to pursue an academic education in agreement with the objectives of the school.
2. how much time training will i get
At NZPAA, students have dedicated Sport/Study blocks built into their academic timetable. These blocks provide structured time for training, skill development, or focused study without compromising academic progress. For competitive or high-performance athletes, this means scheduled sport-specific training supported by quality coaching. The exact training load and frequency will depend on the team a student is selected for.
These blocks are flexible and tailored to individual goals, learning needs, and sporting commitments. Students may use this time for gym sessions, technical skill work, wellbeing activities, or specialist services such as personalised coaching, external certifications, or advanced sport programmes—discussed individually based on aspirations.
Students are not required to specialise in one sport. While some elite athletes choose to focus on a single code, our philosophy—aligned with Sport NZ’s Balance is Better approach—encourages variety and balance. Students can participate in multiple sports, including both winter and summer codes, if they wish.
3. What opportunity is there for students to be involved in school sport teams?
Our intention is for NZPAA students to compete in College Sport Wellington competitions as NZPAA teams. When we can, we anticipate placing full teams in local competitions. In instances where numbers don’t quite reach team thresholds for a particular sport, we will partner with another school to ensure students can still participate and compete at the appropriate level.
4. How does the relationship between NZPAA, Wellington Phoenix Academy and the boarding house work?

Boarding House acceptance is on an availability basis only and is not guaranteed by being a student in the school.

5. What is the cost?
There is no cost to attend NZPAA. However, specialist training or services—such as personalised coaching, external certifications, or advanced sport programmes—may incur additional costs. These will be discussed and scheduled individually with each student, based on their goals and needs.
6. what is the academic programme?
Our academic programme is designed to be knowledge-rich, student-focused, and grounded in evidence-based practice. We offer full NCEA course options across a wide range of learning areas, including English, Science, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Languages, Health & Physical Education, and the Arts. Our curriculum is aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum and supports the holistic development of every learner. The programme includes Sport/Study blocks, allowing students to balance academic progress with physical training or wellbeing activities. This flexible approach supports both high-performance athletes and students seeking focused study time, promoting academic excellence, personal growth, and resilience.
7. what does it mean to be a charter school?
A charter school is a publicly funded school that operates independently of the traditional state school system. It is established under a charter—a formal agreement—that outlines the school’s mission, educational goals, and accountability measures.
Charter schools have the flexibility to design their own curriculum, teaching methods, and learning environments, while still being held to high standards of academic performance and student wellbeing. This autonomy allows them to innovate and respond to the specific needs of their communities.
At the heart of a charter school is a commitment to providing quality education, fostering strong relationships, and creating opportunities for students to thrive both academically and personally.
8. How will students get to trainings in different places?
As the plan for each student is finalised options will be worked to provide the best solution. The school will have access to transport.
